Poeta, dramaturgo, profesor y funcionario público estadounidense. Ejerció la abogacía antes de partir a Francia en 1923 a perfeccionar su oficio poético. Sus primeros poemas, Ars Poetica (1926) y You, Andrew Marvell [Tú, Andrew Marvell] (1930), aparecen con frecuencia en antologías. Posteriormente manifestó su preocupación por los ideales democráticos en versos "públicos, como Conquistador (1932, Premio Pulitzer) y Public Speech [Discurso público] (1936). Otras obras incluyen Collected Poems [Poesías completas] (1952, Premio Pulitzer) y la obra dramática en verso J.B. (1958, Premio Pulitzer). Trabajó como bibliotecario en la Biblioteca del Congreso (1939–44) y como vicesecretario de Estado (1944–45); más tarde dictó clases en Harvard (1949–62).
